So nun sind wir in Deutschland. Noch einmal packen. Noch ein paar Mal die Prozedur an der Tanke, dann die Abschluss-Fete und dann ab nach Hause. Daher sollte dies mein letzter Eintrag von unterwegs sein. Fragen, Kritik und Anregungen gerne über meine Formularseite. So, finally we made Germany. Still low temp. but easier than the roads we had so far. . One more time packing the bike,  some more times the prozedure at the gasstations, then the farewell-party then home. This should be my last entry from on the road. Have a jolly X-Mas and a happy new year just in case we don’t see/write ourselves anymore.

Es fällt mir sehr schwer diese Zeilen zu schreiben, aber nach fast 30.000 km musste ich heute den ersten wirklichen Defekt an der XT feststellen. Die von mir persönlich nachgerüstete Philips Night Vision-Glühbirne hat den Geist aufgegeben, d.h. das Abblendlicht geht nicht mehr. Zwar hab ich eine Ersatzbirne dabei, aber um die Einzubauen müsste ich mein schönes Windschild aus Klebeband zerstören. Also fahr ich nur mit Standlicht und ggf. Fernlicht weiter.

Zudem musste ich heute nach fast 8000 km doch tatsächlich 1 bar in die Reifen nachpumpen. Unglaublich, ich überlege ernsthaft meine Anwälte einzuschalten

Naja, hoffentlich war’s das bis nach Hause. Einen abschliessenden Bericht zur XT als Weltreisemotorrad mit den Vor- und vor allem Nachteilen werde ich dann später noch nachliefern.

It is hard for me to write these lines, but after almost 30.000km I had today detected the first really defect with my XT. The Philips-Night-Vision-Bulb which I had personally installed before the start today stopped working. Sure I have a backup with me but than I have to destroy my nice ductape-windshield. So I continue with parking light and if necessary high beam until home.

Beside that I detected also a loss from almost 1 bar in the tyres after only 8000km?! Maybe I should alarm my lawyers

OK, hopefully that’s it until home. A final report about the XT as a World-Trip-Bike with all advantages and disadvantages will follow later.

In Riesenschritten nähern wir uns der Heimat. Wir verzichten auf alle zusätzlichen Sightseeingtage, um Weihnachten wieder zuhause zu sein. Die Tage bestehen nur aus Frühstück, Motorradfahren, Tanken mit Aufwärmen, Internet, Abendessen, Schlafen.

Dabei kommt mir das ganze wie ein Countdown vor. Erst betreten wir europäischen Boden, dann die EU, heute haben wir die deutsche Zeitzone erreicht und demnächst sind wir wieder im Bereich des EURO und zum Schluß wird die offizielle Landessprache dann auch wieder deutsch sein.

In huge hops we’re heading home. We canceled all Sightseeing to be home at X-mas time. Breakfast, Motorcycling, Fueling incl. Warming up, Internet, Dinner, Sleep; That’s all on the agenda.

The whole thing is like a Countdown. First we reached Europe, than the EU, today we reached the german Time-Zone soon we will pay in EURO again and at the end the official language will be German again.

Irgendwie gefällt mir Istanbul immer noch nicht, auch nicht bei meinem 2. Besuch hier. Sobald man in den europäischen Teil der Stadt einfährt, glaubt man in eine andere Welt zu kommen. Alles ändert sich. Die Motorräder haben wieder mehr als 400cc. Man sieht alle westeuropäischen Statussymbole und Konsumgüter: von Autos über Bekleidung bis hin zum Fastfood. Das ganze passt in die Türkei wie das Oktoberfest nach Las Vegas, insbesondere da die Art der Menschen sich ebenfalls schlagartig ändert. Keine uneigennützige Freundlichkeit mehr (hier hat man das Gefühl, das die Leute schon für das Grüßen Trinkgeld haben wollen), oft arrogant und herablassend gegenüber dem Ostteil der Türkei und ach so kosmopolitisch.

Wir bleiben einen Tag hier, um Wartungsarbeiten an den Maschinen durchzuführen. Die Tschechen haben sich schon in Erzurum verabschiedet. Bei Jaroslav Kadlec hat das hintere Radlager seiner GS nach nur 68000 km den Geist aufgegeben. Leider kann man das bei der BMW nur mit Spezialwerkzeug wechseln oder den kompletten Strang austauschen. War in dem kleinen Ort beides nicht zu machen. Also hat er sich einen Pickup für den Transport nach Ankara organisiert. Jaroslav Roubal hat ne schwere Magen-Darm-Grippe und hat sich deshalb entschlossen, auch weil auf dem Pickup noch Platz war, ebenfalls sich fahren zu lassen. Die beiden werden dann von Ankara direkt nach Hause fahren.

Auch bei den Holländern ist die Stimmung ähnlich wie bei mir nicht mehr groß nach Sightseeing, sondern eher schnell nach Hause zu kommen. Wir werden in großen Etappen über Sofia und Zagreb auf dem schnellsten Wege nach Deutschland fahren.

Somehow I dont like Istanbul. It is completely different from the rest of Turkey and in my opinion not in a good way. OK you got all western style stuff from bikes, cars, clothing and fast food but the people have also changed. They are kind of arrogant, think they are so much better than the rest of turkey. Those annoying flying dealers in the front of the mosques e.g. And the service personell here seems to want even tip just for saying “hallo” to you. Total opposite than in Tosya for example where I was given free fruits from a fruitdealer because I have this cold.

We stay here for 1 day to do some maintenance on the motorcycles. The Czech guys have already left us in Erzurum. Jaroslav Kadlec has a broken shaft drive and organized a pickup to take his BMW GS to Ankara to repair it and Jaroslav Roubal fighting also with a serious flu joined him on the pickup. They will head straight to Czech Republic from Ankara.

The dutch guys also don’t seem to be to eager for sightseeing anymore (like myself). Everybody wants to get home, so we will do large hops crossing Sofia and Zagreb heading for Germany.

Für BMW-Fahrer gibt’s ja alles: von den elektrisch beheizten Socken bis zu den beheizten Ohrstöpseln und ich kann mich noch an die Diskussion in Australien erinnern, als ich anmerkte: “Ja, aber wenn Euer elektronisches Geraffel mal ausfällt….!” und zur Antwort bekam, das sei so wahrscheinlich, wie wenn eine Jacke plötzlich nicht mehr wasserdicht wäre! Pah!

Ja, und jetzt bei wegen Schnee gesperrten Passstraßen und dadurch langen Umwegen durch Schnee und/oder Regen war es soweit. Was soll ich Euch sagen, das BMW-Geraffel funktioniert tadellos und ich frier mir hier einen ab, weil meine Stiefel und meine Jacke nicht mehr wasserdicht sind. Das sind solche Ar…löcher diese Drecks-BMW-Fahrer

300€-Daytona-Stiefel von Louis mit Innenschuh und angeblich 100%-wasserdicht, aber nur von Innen nach Außen. Wie zu Ted Simon’s Zeiten muß ich eine Plastiktüte über die Socken ziehen (ein allzustarkes Schinken-Käse-Aroma am Abend wird von dem Silberfaden in den Socken verhindert), aber der Fuß kühlt natürlich trotzdem aus mit dem Resultat, daß ich mir eine heftige Erkältung eingefangen hab.

Aber damit nicht genug. Der viele Dreck und Sand aus Indien und Pakistan, den ich mir einfach immer vom Visier gewischt habe, hat selbiges so stark verkratzt, daß ich im Schneeregen nahezu blind unterwegs bin. Glücklicherweise hab ich noch meine Cross-Brille dabei. Jetzt sehe ich zwar wieder was, aber es recht laut im Helm und extrem frisch um die Nase. Wenn ich schneller als 130 fahre (was ich muss, wenn ich die 100 Tage schaffen will), habe ich das Gefühl mir friert das Gesicht ein.

Ich muss zugeben, ich hab mich schon besser amüsiert.

There is anything available for BMW-Riders. Heated Socks, heated, Jackets, even heated Earplugs and I remember the discussion we had in Autralia when I mentioned “Well, yes, but when all your electric stuff stops working you’re screwed..!” and they told me that this is as likeley as a jacket will not be waterproof anymore from one day to the other.

Well and now with closed roads because of the snow and long detours in snow and rain we finally reached that point. What should I say, this BMW-craps works fine and I am freezing to death because my boots and my jacket are not waterproof anymore from one day to the other. Those f… BMW-riders are such bastards

300€-Daytona-Boots from Louis and I have to wear plastic bags over the socks like Ted Simon 30 years ago. F… it!

But that’s not all. All the dust and sand in India and Pakistan which I wiped from my visor all the time scratched it and I am almost blind in this snowrain. Fortunately I have my cross-goggles with me. Now I can see but it is quite noisy and very cold in the helmet. When I ride more than 130 (which I have to do to stay under the 100 days) my face literally freezes with the result of having a bad cold. I have to admit that there were much better times on this trip than now.
